In 1934 the driving test was introduced. Happily for lovers of the absurd, the first to master the half-hour test of basic driving skills and knowledge of the Highway Code was a Mr Beene , who paid 7s & 6d ( 7/6 ) for the privilege.

Average figures should always be used with some caution, however according to some sources the average salary in 1934 was £144, the average car cost £300, and the average house cost £485. Surprisingly the price per litre of petrol was equivalent to about £1 today. You can do the sums and draw your own conclusions !

Also in 1934 Surrey Downs Housing printed a sales brochure for the new Tattenham Corner Estate. (Head office at that time was 146 Great Tattenhams). These are some of the pages from that brochure. Many examples of these designs can be seen around this area.
