Tadworth Terracycle is a one-woman recycling initiative set up by local resident Catherine Banks. She recycles selected wrappers, pouches, and containers. We can’t put this stuff in our grey council bins; we have to put it in our green general refuse bins, which ends up in landfill. Tadworth Terracycle – part of a national Terracycle programme – collects all these materials from residents through a number of drop off points, sorts the materials and sends them off to the original manufacturer’s agent, where they go through a proper recycling process.

Where did it start?

Walkers Crisps scheme originated as crisps were being sent back to Walkers by customers. Terracycle had existed before but was not well known. Acting on this show of consumer power, Walkers saw an opportunityto do something positive, and at the same time gain positive PR. They set up “THE CRISP PACKET SCHEME” for recycling not only its own wrappers and crisp packets, but also the packaging from any crisp manufacturer (except Pringles which has its own scheme).

Catherine comments, “It’s great to do something positive for the environment, and the brilliant add on is that the manufacturers make a cash payment to a chosen charity, depending on the weight of materials collected. One of the chosen charities for Tadworth Terracycle is the Alzheimer Society.”

Catherine operates 28 different schemes with a wide variety of manufacturers. This includes bread bags, KP snacks, confectionery wrappers, personal care and beauty, Colgate toothpaste and more.

If you are not sure whether something is recyclable or not please refer to the Facebook page.
