News and tips from our local trainers by Caroline Baldock

This month, along with her racing tips from local trainers, Caroline provides an obituary for famous jockey Edward Hide who won the Derby on Morston in 1973.

Edward Hide (12th April 1937 – 7th September 2023)

Edward was born in Lawton in Shropshire of a farming family with strong horse connections. His father trained point–to–pointers on their 330-acre farm.  Edward was clearly a good rider, and quickly learned to ride racehorses for his father. From then on, an apprenticeship was the next step. In 1954 he was the leading apprentice.

He suffered injuries of course as do most jockeys; one bad shoulder injury nearly finished his career but with help and  hard work he was back in the saddle in seven weeks. His racing record was impressive, Cock of the North 16 times. He won the William Hill Sprint Handicap on Lochnager and Mrs McArdy in the 70’s. He won the St Leger on Cantelo in 1959 and again on Waterloo in 1972.

He rode for both HM Queen Elizabeth and HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.  But his greatest ride was in the 1973 Derby on Morston. He beat Lester Piggott into second place and  Pat Eddery into third place.

In this photograph on the family farm in 1950 Edward is on the right. His sister, Jill is on the left and his brother, Tony in the middle

Jill was to become one of the movers and shakers in the rescue operation of the Durdans in Epsom. With her racing background she simply could not bear to think of the riding school being turned into offices. We have a lot to thank her for.

Now on to the racing. We have lots of exciting races to look forward to.

Michael Attwater’s horses are going well. Concierge was a winner, and she will again.  Street Parade is another one to look out for.

Marlay Park won for Jim Boyle at Epsom and Sparked has also won, so watch out for them again. Also Secret Strength and Buy the Dip.

Adam West won the Nunthorpe Stakes with Live in the Dream which may now go to the breeders Cup in USA. Also Daisy Roots is doing well and also Clenagh Castle. and don’t forget Nelson Rose

Pat Phelan will run Dotties Star again and she will come up trumps. So will Epsom Faithful.

Simon Dow has a very nice horse in Roundabout SilverArenas del Tempo will also be one to watch as well as Ectocross, both placed recently.  Recuerdame, won and will win again.

Watch out for Bowman, recently recovered from an injury. He had already won nicely and is being brought back to fitness. He will win again. Bowman is trained by Laura Mongan.
