It’s highly likely that most people haven’t read the Highway Code since they passed their driving test. But it would be wise if we all checked back every so often to ensure we are following the rules correctly.

The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency, which is responsible for making rules (and law) road users must follow, updates The Highway Code from time to time but this year it has just announced some major changes intended to make our roads and driving safer.

These changes came into effect from the 29th January. They are wide ranging, but the emphasis is to improve road safety for cyclists, pedestrians, and horse riders. Here are three of the most notable ones:

1. When people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way.

2. Cyclists can ride two abreast – and it can be safer to do so.

3. When exiting a parked car, drivers and passengers should use the hand on the opposite side of the door to
open it. Called the “Dutch Reach” it ensures you look over your shoulder and are aware of any approaching
obstacles.

Although already in force, the updated paper version of The Highway Code will not be available until April. There is an app available for £3.49 but only currently for iPhone users.
