We reported last month about the very big hole dug in St Marks Road. This was followed by two further 18 foot deep holes in Great Tattenhams.

These three excavations were part of Surrey County Council’s programme to reduce flooding in our area.

In recent years a number of properties in the Tattenham Corner area have flooded during extreme bad weather. There may be a number of reasons for this including increased building and global warming but the result has been that our drains cannot cope.

Surrey has therefore built what is in effect three gigantic soakaways that allow the water to soak into the chalk beneath us rather than enter our homes. These 18-foot deep holes have been fitted out with pipework similar to large water butts that will enable flood water to drain away into the chalk below the area.

Hopefully the localised flooding will be eliminated or at least significantly reduced.

These photos show the work in progress on Great Tattenhams last month.
