Surrey County Council has launched their Sustainable Warmth programme to help residents on low incomes in hard to heat homes to improve insulation and install energy efficient technology.

Grants of up to £25,000 will be available from Action Surrey which is managing the scheme for the Council.

To check eligibility, click here but we have looked at the requirements of the scheme and these are detailed below:

  • Properties with energy performance rating of E, F or G will be prioritised. (If a property does not have a valid EPC certificate, an assessment can be carried out prior to approval of a grant – but your guideline should be that if your home is cold and losing heat due to poor insulation it’s worth applying).
  • The household must be in receipt of means-tested benefits or have an annual gross income of less than £31,000
  • If the household income exceeds £31,000 and the resultant income after housing costs is less than £20,000 you are still eligible.

The grant is available to both owner occupiers and private renters.

Owner occupiers do not have to contribute to the costs of improvements,  but the landlord of private renters is expected to contribute at least one third of the costs.

The grant can be used  for home insulation, solar panels and air source heat pumps. But the obvious use for residents on low incomes in cold homes is the improvement of insulation. If you are interested, you can make a general enquiry without completing a full application here:
