Literally thousands of people turned up on Epsom Downs to witness the lighting of the Epsom Beacon to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landing on the 6th June.

The Epsom Grandstand was open for refreshments and fish & chips from 7.00 pm with  entertainment provided by local choirs and the Epsom & Ewell Silver Band.

Just before 9.00 pm everyone decamped to the Beacon site to see the lighting of the beacon. Prior to lighting the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell said a few words about D-Day, members of the British Legion presented their flags and a lone piper played.
