The Banstead Wildlife Field was developed 40 years ago as a semi wild open space enjoying a meadow, pond, and perimeter woodland. Located in Basing Road, off Bolters Lane (SM7 2AH), It is the only site set aside for educational purposes in Surrey.
It had been neglected in recent years until two local residents, Diana Beck and Anthea Smithies, supported by Banstead Horticultural Society, decided to do something about this easily accessible wildlife haven.
They held an open day last month when visitors were invited to see local tree surgeons Broadleaf Tree Services show off their skills in transforming a felled tree into a cosy teaching area.

During the day children from Banstead Infants Forest School and St Anne’s Primary School visited the site. As well as seeing the lumberjacks at work, Diana showed the children the new sensory garden that has just been completed on the site. They also explored the wildlife pond.

Visitors are welcome to visit the field at any time. You can park nearby, and the gate is open. But the team regularly meet up at the field on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 9.30 am to 12 pm. Come along then to find out more or if you fancy a bit of outdoor exercise, volunteers are welcome to help restore and maintain this wildlife field.
