We have a separate article about the Banstead Men’s Club which is one of a number of activities organised by Age Concern Banstead. But as this charity does such a lot to help older people, we thought it deserved an article of its own.

Something we didn’t realise is that it is a local charity. Although there are other Age Concerns around the country, they are all local entities and run by locals. No Chief Executives on big salaries!

This year, Age Concern Banstead, is one of Mayor Councillor Jill Bray’s official charities. She says about the charity:

“I chose Banstead age concern as one of my mayoral charities because of the work they did during the pandemic ensuring the elderly people in the area where well served with groceries, a friendly contact, and everyday necessities such as hearing aid batteries. They developed an exceptionally close and professional relationship with Banstead Waitrose which was a joy to witness.

Having worked with them now though for the past year I am amazed at the width and breadth of what they do. They run a range of interesting clubs which specifically target various groups from those who have recently lost a life partner to a men’s group with interesting speakers with a sandwich and a beer to a very friendly singalong group for those whose life is impacted by dementia.

They also act as advocates to ensure the elderly have access to services and in this era where everything has to be done online, they provide significant help and advice to ensure that nobody is disadvantaged as a result of not being computer literate.

They are truly amazing local charity who punch well above their weight.”

Banstead Centre  The Horseshoe Banstead – Age Concern Banstead’s base

Our local Age Concern is based at The Banstead Centre in The Horseshoe, Banstead but covers an area from here to the M25. It is run by a group of local trustees led by Chairman Nick Ponsford, all volunteers and none receiving any remuneration. Its wide range of services include a luncheon club, the Men’s Club mentioned elsewhere, a bereavement café, and dementia carer’s support group as well as a home visiting service and transport to and from medical appointments.

It relies on donations and grants to provide its services and is always on the lookout for volunteers. You can also become a member for an annual subscription of £12. You can find out more by visiting their website or telephone 01737 352156
